Both give 1 energy per hit no matter what level smiting prayers is at. The only thing smiting prayers affects on balth's spirit is the amount of adrenaline gained per hit.

I think that at lvl 12 smiting spirit gives the equivalent of 1 strike of adrenaline. Which is a lot. Mr. Ensign posted something on the subject in threads of interest, you should check it out.

i like B spirit better, because it combines well with life bond, but essence can be cast on other monks too... so its up to you really...

but you would get low regeneation and not always get attacked (if you use both on yourself...)
seems pointless to me, but i may be wrong...

Not always. If you don't get hit by physical damage then use essence bond to party member who does get hit by it and then you get 1 energy from each hit.
If you get hit often then balthazar's spirit is superior because it gives energy from all kind of hits, not just physical hits. Direct damage (non-projectile) are not hits. It also give some extra adrenaline.

basically, as i see it:
for pve - if you are a monk, use essence on your tank.
for pvp - use balth spirit on yourself, and maybe life bond on the other monks, if you are a protector...
